A-Level Business

Excel in data response and essay papers with evaluation, application to context, and synoptic assessment for university.

What is A-Level Business?

A-Level Business Studies develops analytical, evaluative, and strategic thinking through the study of how real businesses operate, make decisions, and respond to change. It covers marketing, finance, operations, human resources, and strategic management, combining quantitative calculations with extended evaluative writing. A-Level Business is highly valued by universities for Business, Economics, Management, and Finance degree programmes. In Dubai's international schools, the subject is examined through AQA and Edexcel — all of which place significant weight on case study analysis, data interpretation, and the ability to construct and justify a well-reasoned argument. At Improve ME, our Business Studies tutors build the analytical frameworks and evaluation skills that distinguish A and A* candidates.

Our A-Level Business Teaching Approach

01

Case Study Analysis Technique

The Paper 3 pre-released case study is one of the most important elements of A-Level Business. We work through the case study in depth, identifying the key business issues, financial data, and strategic context — so students enter the exam with confident, informed answers rather than generic ones.

02

25-Mark Essay Framework

25-mark essays account for a significant proportion of total marks across all three papers and require a specific structure — analysis of both sides, use of evidence and context, and a justified conclusion. We teach and practise this framework until students can produce a high-quality 25-mark response reliably within 35 minutes.

03

Quantitative Skills

A-Level Business includes a significant quantitative component — investment appraisal, ratio analysis, break-even, and financial statement construction. We ensure students are confident with all calculation types and can interpret results in a business context.

04

Evaluation and Judgement

The highest marks in Business Studies are reserved for genuine evaluation — considering context, weighing competing arguments, and drawing justified conclusions. We develop this skill deliberately in every session rather than treating it as something students either have or do not.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Business at Improve ME

What is the pre-released case study in A-Level Business Paper 3?

Paper 3 is based on a pre-released case study about a real or realistic business, released several months before the exam. All questions in Paper 3 are based on this business and its context. Students who prepare thoroughly for the case study — understanding the business, its industry, its financials, and its strategic position — have a significant advantage in Paper 3.

How important are the 25-mark essays in A-Level Business?

Extremely important. Each of the three papers includes at least one 25-mark essay question, meaning they collectively account for a very significant proportion of the total marks available. Consistently performing well on 25-mark essays is the single most important factor in achieving an A or A* in A-Level Business.

Is A-Level Business Studies very mathematical?

There is a quantitative component — typically around 10–15% of marks — covering investment appraisal (payback, ARR, NPV), ratio analysis, break-even, and financial statement interpretation. Students do not need to be strong mathematicians, but they do need to be accurate and confident with these specific calculation types.

Does A-Level Business Studies help for university?

Yes — A-Level Business Studies is well-regarded for Business, Management, Marketing, Finance, and Economics degree applications. It demonstrates analytical and evaluative thinking that university admissions tutors value. For students applying to competitive business schools, combining Business with Economics or Mathematics strengthens the application further.

What is the difference between A-Level Business Studies and A-Level Economics?

Business Studies focuses on how individual firms operate, make decisions, and compete — with a strong emphasis on management, marketing, and strategy. Economics focuses on broader market and macroeconomic theory — supply and demand, inflation, fiscal policy, international trade. Many strong students take both, as they complement each other well.
