EYFS Mathematics
Structured mathematics sessions for ages 3–5. We build early number confidence and logical reasoning through our MaThesis programme.
What is Early Years Foundation Stage Mathematics
EYFS Mathematics develops secure early foundations in number, numerical patterns, shape, space, and measure. Children learn to count confidently, understand quantity, and apply simple calculations while also recognising patterns and exploring spatial awareness.
Improve ME's MaThesis programme, aligned with EYFS, places strong emphasis on building a secure grounding in numbers to support future mathematical success. Our unique programme, consisting of 4 core learning pillars, ensures children develop confidence, accuracy, and skills that go beyond classroom expectations.

What Your Child Learns
Four areas of focus across every EYFS Mathematics session.
Building early number confidence
Number & Arithmetic
- Number sequencing up to 50 — recognising, ordering, and finding missing numbers
- Mental addition and subtraction using counting on and counting back
- Introductory multiplication through skip counting and doubling
- Early division through sharing and halving activities
- Simple word problems using addition or subtraction
Exploring the physical world mathematically
Shapes & Measures
- Recognising 2D shapes and understanding their basic properties
- Fine motor development through tracing numbers and shapes with precision
- Size and measurement concepts — big/small, long/short, heavy/light
- Reading and labelling a clock with simple time
Making sense of information
Data Handling & Comparison
- Sorting and classifying objects into clear categories
- Comparing numbers using greater than, less than, more, fewer, most, least
- Interpreting simple picture graphs, bar graphs, and data tables
Thinking carefully, not just calculating
Reasoning & Logic
- Developing visual discrimination by identifying the odd one out and spotting differences
- Applying systematic thinking to recognise patterns and sequences
- Applying problem-solving strategies in mathematical puzzles, solving shapes and numbers Sudoku
How We Track Progress
Every child starts with a baseline assessment to identify their current level — what is secure, what is developing, and where support is needed. At EYFS, this is carried out through gentle, observation-based interaction rather than formal testing.
Progress is tracked in every session. We monitor understanding, identify gaps early, and adjust teaching immediately — ensuring steady, confident progress at the right pace.
Parents receive clear, regular updates on progress, confidence and next steps. At this stage, strong parent partnership is essential — and we prioritise open, consistent communication.
How We Teach It
Our approach is structured, personalised and designed to build real confidence and progress.
In-House Programme
We use Improve ME worksheets through our own curriculum, focusing on number, patterns and early problem solving.
Individual and Clear Progression
Every child follows their own structured learning journey. Skills are taught step by step, from counting and number recognition to addition, patterns and reasoning.
Certificates and Milestones
Children work towards maths milestones such as number skills and early addition, earning certificates as they progress.
Learning Agreements
Children take ownership of their learning through simple agreements, setting goals and celebrating their progress.
